In 1986, John Scarborough resigned as Executive Director of AIHP, and I was asked to serve as acting head of the Institute. Along with the organizational responsibilities of the position came the editorship of Pharmacy in History. Thirty-two years later I am stepping down from both jobs.
While it can be difficult to measure my achievements as AIHP Executive Director, it is far easier to point to 111 issues of Pharmacy in History that bear my name as Editor. Sometimes a struggle, every newly printed issue of the journal brought singular satisfaction during my professional career. The printed word is both the life blood and sacramental product of the historian’s labors.
Above all, I want to thank the membership of the Institute for supporting PH and all the programming of the Institute since its founding in 1941. In particular, I express appreciation to Dr. Elaine C. Stroud who served as managing editor of PH during most of my tenure. Elaine did the bulk of the work getting the journal out including the creative layout of each issue. Her example of dedication has been followed ably by Dr. Gregory Bond as Assistant Editor since 2016. Present and past staff members such as Beth Fisher and Rosemary Zurlo-Cuva contributed significantly to the effort of getting the journal produced and distributed. Lastly, I wish to thank Prof. Glenn Sonnedecker who provided valuable guidance in my early years of editorship.
Prof. Lucas Richert, the new Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy in History, has invited me to continue to contribute to the journal, and I have accepted. In our recent chats, his fresh ideas for PH and the field of the history of pharmacy make me excited for the future. I look forward to what the next 111 issues of Pharmacy in History may hold!
